Field service is moving well beyond basic digitization. The market is now roughly $5.7B and growing at a 12% CAGR through 2031. The more important shift, however, is happening inside the product: platforms are evolving from systems that document and coordinate work into software that increasingly automates how service organizations operate. AI is being applied across scheduling, dispatch, technician support, predictive maintenance, customer communication, and back-office workflows, with 40% of field service organizations already using generative AI.
That shift is changing where value sits in the category. Scheduling, routing, and work-order functionality are increasingly standardized. Differentiation is moving toward vertical workflows, proprietary asset data, compliance requirements, and AI capabilities embedded directly into the service process. The economics are already tangible. AI-enabled routing can reduce fleet miles by 20-35%, predictive-maintenance deployments can generate 10-30x ROI within 12-18 months, and more advanced technology adoption is translating into materially better technician productivity and asset uptime.
The labor backdrop is accelerating adoption. An estimated 2.1 million skilled-trades roles could go unfilled by 2030, leaving service organizations with fewer experienced technicians and greater pressure to increase output per worker. At the same time, many smaller service businesses are still moving off paper-based processes and onto cloud platforms, while more mature operators are shifting from reactive break-fix work toward recurring maintenance and outcome-based service models.
These trends are also reshaping the transaction landscape. A fragmented vendor base continues to attract both strategic buyers and financial sponsors. Premium valuations are increasingly tied to vertical depth, AI defensibility, recurring revenue mix, technician utilization, and retention rather than scale alone. Financing activity has strengthened, with 2026 deal count and disclosed value tracking well above 2024 levels and larger checks flowing toward modern, AI-enabled platforms.
AGC brings extensive experience across Field Service Management and the broader operations software ecosystem, including deep connectivity with many of the category's most active acquirers and investors.
We'd welcome the opportunity to discuss the trends and capital markets activity shaping the sector.
