Amid some very tumultuous times led by all sorts of worldwide economic, market and political issues (pick your poison) mixed with the "SaaS Apocalypse" and "AI Tornado," we thought it would be helpful to share an updated overview of key trends, transactions, most active buyers/investors and publicly traded multiples across the Digital Marketing, Martech, Marketing Data and Retail/eCommerce Technology landscapes.
Most companies that we talk to across these sectors are still playing "defense" dealing with continued tight marketing budgets, AI Disruption, and over saturation of marketing related tools and capabilities. Growth, Gross Retention and Profitability continue to be the key KPIs that buyers and investors are interested in. This is what everyone cared most about throughout 2024 and into early 2025. Then, starting with Trump's controversial tariff program in April 2025 and adding in the "AI Disruption Snowball" over the course of last year, investor/buyer perspectives changed on how to consider/value potential acquisition candidates. For PE investors, risk assessment/underwriting, long term growth potential/TAM size, and potential exit strategies/multiples became the driving factors determining the attractiveness of a potential acquisition/investment candidate. And, for strategics, the value and uniqueness of the particular technology drove interest and value. We continue to see these trends although clearly nothing else seems to matter in the market right now other than the AI Disruption. It continues its "hurricane force" across all sectors everywhere and we don't see that changing anytime soon.
